Discover Madeira

The Archipelago of Madeira is a Portuguese Region which includes two inhabited islands, Madeira
and Porto Santo and two uninhabited islands, the Selvagens and the Desertas.

The island of Madeira is situated approximately 700 kms from the African Coast and 1.000 kms from continental Portugal. Porto Santo is a much smaller island, famous for its beach and golden sands which are renowned for their therapeutic value.

The name 'Madeira (wood) was given by the Portuguese navigators because of its luxuriant forests which covered the island. The story goes that João Gonçalves Zarco Commander of an expedition to Africa, first landed on Porto Santo when his ship was forced there by a great storm. They disembarked around 1419. The name 'Santo' (saint) represented 'safe land' for those men traumatised by that storm. Some time later a dark shadow was seen on the horizon which then disappeared and was later seen again. Zarco went to uncover this mystery and that is how the island of Madeira was discovered, which was about 1420.

A land blessed with such natural attributes, Madeira is an important tourist point. The mild climate, the beautiful scenery, the hospitality of its people and its culture charms and fascinates those who visit. Of volcanic origin, Madeira offers unforgettable and breath-taking vistas. Between its majestic mountains and its clear blue sea you will stay entranced with the magic of this land.
